People may want to know ..... are you talking "ALL" scripts or just attack scripts. Plus do you consider macros the same as a script. It would be amusing to find a game where everyone PPT's and gets colies 100% by hand... :)

if you can not respond to a hail then your using a script that i don't want. one thing about tradewars that i remember is the human interaction. if you leave a script unattended while someone is trying to talk to you. it most likely is me seeing if your an actual person. i already kicked someone off because i thought he was not attending to his "script" and i thought he was a BOT. if you logon with your real name i will reconsider the "bot" thing.

Do you play on your own server then?

When running colos I run a macro, and set that to loop until I am out of colos or turns. During this time I would be unable to reply to any hails as the macro is running. My macro isn't a script, but that would still be a problem, neh?

Most playes can respond to hails, even when doing heavy scripting.

if they are at their computers that is.

look all i want is a place that is a casual place to play. like a lounge or a chat room. it is just those who take the game very serious and like to "cheat" with their "scripts" that take all the fun out of the game. or at least the game that i remember. as a teen. with dial-up. don't force me to go 2400 baud on ya. that is how i played as a teen. on 2400 baud. so it was the human interaction that made friends and still made enemies because of their different idea of fun. not the seeing how fast you can make 1000000 credits.

like have you ever played DOOM? how much did you play DOOM after you learned the id cheat codes? did you ever try to see if you could ever make it through it with out the codes? did you like the game after you saw the ending after cheating? as much as without?

help scripts and other automation ruins a perfectly good game and GOD MODE IN DOOM KILLED DOOM, for those who played without cheating still like doom as a classic. those who cheat only like doom for it's graphics (at the time) not it's boring repetitious game play.

How did you have any human interaction when only one person could be logged in at a time?
I remember the 2400 baud days...
And I sure wish I had some scripts and automation back then.
It doesn't kill the game, it makes you need to play better.

It doesn't kill the game, it makes you need to play better.

you dial up to the sysop you verify your identity via a call from the sysop via voice or call back.

and yes it does kill the game. since needing others to "play better" defeats the purpose of playing just because it is fun.

why can't people just play by the rules without questioning the rules altogether?

you would think it is like taking away their crutch makes them "unable to walk" when their legs are not even broken.

Again, your social interaction is limited to that one phone call, as then you tie up your phone line dialing into the BBS again.

I remember colonizing by hand, and PPTing by hand. There was no fun involved, just tedium. The fun came from finding a player outside fedspace, or finding a base to invade.

And what rules are those? The game has built in rules- can't kill anyone you want in fedspace, etc.

Each server can set up their own rules as well- truce, time limits, no buyouts, etc. Rules are supposed to be questioned. There is nothing worse than blind obedience. Revolutionary France and Nazi Germany are good examples of not questioning the rules.

Most of the people I know who play this game are from the IT community. We take are rules very seriously; after we have questioned them, bent them, broken them, and have found any other possible way to get around them.

Scripts are not crutches, they are tools. No one has yet been able to write a script that will created them a character, log them in, and win them the game. Sometimes tools break- I remember when bots were first getting started, and peope found ways to break other people's bots. That's the risk of using a bot. Same thing with other scripts. The tools are only as good as the person using them.

see what i mean. you find it no longer fun to play the manual way because of your "tool" has ruined the game for you.

Oso wrote:

the rules set up by the Sysop. like no duping. the game it's self cannot enforce those rules. only sysops can. one way to tell if rules are broken is to watch the actions of each player, but just to use an honor system leads to players bending and breaking the rules like you say

that is what i am trying to do. and that is why i am answering your questions.

Ok i admit you have a point there. i did not realize i was such a dictator. perhaps i should be like Obama?

Yes your rules.. but not mine i see.

crutches are tools.

For colonizing at least I could make a macro and let that run repeatedly.
As for rules- I was referring to rules in general.
There is no one right way to play this game, as I have mentioned repeatedly in other threads.

Crutches are not tools. Crutches get put down when no longer required to stand/walk. Shoes are tools. They allow you to go where it would be more difficult to go otherwise (hot sand, sharp rocks). You can get to where you're going without them, but it would be a big pain hehe.

So are you cool with macros then?
