Depending on what you're trying to accomplish, I think it would be worth focusing mostly on current players rather than those "retired".

Epi's list is a decent model (dealt mostly with players active at the time, along with some of the then-legendary retired players)
Guardian also had a rather extensive player rankings page at one point.
Vader had a really cool player highlight section on his old page.

Players and people in general seem to respond to being ranked, listed, acknowledged. Everyone says they don't care, but most do. It adds another angle of competition and validation for the effort they put into the game.

I do miss playing the game, but I don't miss the 24/7 commitments that it required.
