That doesn't make sense.
Wayne aka The Mad Hatter Yes, you could host a team if you choose to. The Mad Hatter wrote: They called them PermaCorps back in the BBS days, before I ran the first 20K sector game by programming a hack that enabled the Trade Wars 2002 V1.00 through V1.03D to use multiple data files. I still have the source code for it backed up.
PermaCorps are nothing new, nor are server raids. The Count of Time, Black Shadow, Zoobar, and myself used to raid local Bulletin Board systems, and destroy the game that was being played there by being the best damned players, and knowing the rules better.
I was the local "distributor" of Tradewars 2002 effectively, because I was the only person who was willing to run up their phone bill using a 2400 baud modem to call Gary's BBS in Kansas to download the new versions.
I have to call Zoobar anyway, I'll ask if he is interested in saying anything.
Wayne aka The Mad Hatter I was poking fun at Cruncher with the PermaCorps comment I’m trying to attract “the best damned players, (that know) the rules better” for this game.

What is the corp size, I saw in the last one the count was 6, but I noticed on a forum not to be mentioned by name there is talk of 5. We are within 3 weeks can we get a set number so we can get planning. I don't feel like scrambling at the last minute or have to ask someone to sit out. Can we get final rules/corp sizes and stick to them?

Cruncher wrote: Runaway Proton wrote: Cruncher wrote: In the spirt of BOTE, shouldn't teams come from active servers? And the players are the ones who actually play that server?
That was the original premise of this game. Cruncher I won't argue the premise of the game. I do know that the game wasn't hosted after 2002 until I hosted it as SG's request in 2007. We discussed it then, and it was explained to me by him that anybody with a valid code could sponsor a team. It was run that way in 2007 and continued since. As far as players playing that site, it couldn't work that way any more. Players don't as a whole play a single site. So to limit them like that would be difficult. As TWGS has become a global thing, rather than the BBS game it used to be, we have to be a bit flexible and allow tournaments to grow with the game. I don't think we've ruined the tournament by moving outside this premise. Without this premise then we have just another tournament, the only difference is this one has closer to classic edits. Nothing Elite about it, just the same 2 or 3 teams who enjoy using bugs... sigh. Micro...I by no means consider myself an ELITE player...I want to play in this tournament...I played in yours ...I lost but had fun.... played HHT....I won and had fun.... I play 4 to 6 hours of TW a day...Some games on Beta and some on 1.03... I dont care about the bugs... I just play because its fun... If they wnat to use bugs or know about them so what... I will continue to play...Kinda like Cruncher not using scripts...as long as she has fun who cares... STOP worrying about who knows what bugs and might use them and just play your game and enjoy yourself... I know I will know matter who I play with or against in this tourney

I know I will know matter who I play with or against in this tourney I’m not sure why you quoted Cruncher and then addressed me. My only concern about bugs is that they get reported to JP so he can fix them. I am not the type of person that would even use an accepted "Advanced Tactic" if it gave me an unfair advantage. I am not a competitive player, and I don't have the time it would take to learn every aspect of this game. I intend to play, and have fun even if I know I can’t win.

I'll get it collected, approved, and posted here soon.

 Re: *** Official BOTE 2011 Thread ***
I talked to Zoobar this afternoon. What he said was: Quote: Since I've quit playing, the Battle of the Elite concept is open to the community. I don't have contact information for Mana Knight, so I don't know his opinion. At this point I'm going to probably piss off everyone. Those who know me, know this is the normal state of affairs. Battle of the Elite was meant as a server team based game. The reason it was designed that way is that it dates back to the MBBS days. The cost of first, an MBBS license, and then a High Velocity Software Trade Wars license, meant that there were damned few servers. When JP came out with the TWGS version, the cost of operating a Trade Wars server plummeted. I know of a lot of people who bought licenses just so they could practice. Others like me ran servers, and I actually programmed a couple of add-on packages for TWGS before I dumped Microsoft Windows because it was a total piece of crap (and yes JP, you aren't seeing things, I have a server running - will email you later). There are several issues: 1) The expansion on the number of available servers. I could see 300 teams signing up for the tournament. 2) Battle of the Elite has always run with the latest version of Tradewars 2002, originally on HVS, and later on TWGS. According to memory JP gave out copies of the latest Beta for use in tournaments, including BOTE. This was done to kill the bug use and it worked to a certain extent. 3) Battle of the Elite always used standard MBBS settings. 4) Standard MBBS settings meant teams of up to six. Now you could play it differently, but that is the classic settings. Wayne

 Re: *** Official BOTE 2011 Thread ***
I may be way off base about this, but I take Battle of the Elite to mean that the winner of the tournament has proved to be elite among modern players, not that only the "elite" could participate. That would be Battle of the Exclusive. Today, it's obviously possible for anyone to plunk down $10 to get a TWGS license and join the game. So the "you need a license" rule is really outmoded today.
I think the way to go is for large public sites like Ice 9, Ultimatetw, etc, to sponsor teams, but for the tournament to be open to unaffiliated teams as well. Personally, I'd expect the teams from the big sites to be the "elite" teams, but that doesn't mean that some team nobody knows about couldn't come in and compete.
That's just my opinion.
On the question of bug use, obviously as a player, Orion, it's your choice to not care if others cheat in games you play. But I think everyone should be aware of the situation, because for many people it's just lame as h*ll to invest time and energy into a game where the eventual winner is the team with the least scruples.
You said that you know of bugs, Orion, but you don't use them. Have you reported them? If not, then why?

Wayne I piss people off daily around here, that's my "job"! LOL I was around for the first one, and this was before Mega Rob bug was known, or widely known... so the rule of corp size was 6 and Mega corping was allowed as long as the red/blue corps had simular names, or registered as such. Back then on HVS alignment was not so easily manipulated. http://tradewars.fament.com/original-bote/bote.html

Just one question though, Max Users: 30 <- Why so low? OK another one, how many deaths? And is tournament death mode fixed in 1.03?

Players set low to just eliminate having to sort through 200 empty player slots when you run a death count script. We will adjust to accommodate as many players as enter the game. 8 deaths, and it is clarified how the death mode (bug) will be handled in the rules posted.
