All you great and powerfull sysops ruled that a bot wasn't a dupe.....simple as that.....all servers have a no duping clause in their rules... if a bot is a dupe it wouldn't be allowed....so if you don't want people to use bots, make a rule...your 75 bucks....not mine....

i don't see the difference between telling someone to run saveme or to do buydowns....as a control aspect....if a person is afk for a few minutes or a week it is all the same...time shouldn't even factor in . As long as the person made his/her account and turned their bot on..then its not duping.

sure there was some grey area when external connections where used, and you great and powerful sysops deemed this as a NO-NO.

man does this seem like deja vu or what......can't believe this is being hashed up again...

The difference is the player is actually deciding to do something at your request, and they have to be at keys. The player that just logs in, turns on their bot, and goes AFK is no different than if I decided to log in from two IP addresses (the wonders of wireless) and controlled the second player - at least from the sysOp's detection ability.

Another difference in a botted AFK player and a dupe is when connections are lost or the script crashes - the dupe can easily be reset where the botted AFK player cannot. This issue was evidenced by a player on MTW showing at the game selection screen - something similar to "{alias} - bot frozen" as the login name that showed up for a few days - AFK bot error.

So now I am wondering if dupes for a corp should be permitted in any game, and if, considering botted players, there is a valid reason not to allow them. Does it really matter if you are playing against a dupe corp or a "live" but maybe memorex corp?

So I'm guessing your saying that allowing dupes is acceptable as long as they are within a corp? The question I have is where do you draw the line? Let's say the corp size is 5. That would allow one person to create 5 dupes. What if they choose to create 5 dupes to infiltrated 5 seperate corps having access to each corps information and assets? Where does it stop? Maybe we should all change our alias to Corp Killer. lol

Bot usage in my opinion has to be treated like the duping rule. The sysop will need to set a well defined rule about just how far bot usage can go, and monitor nodes to find out who is breaking the rule. Just because the IP's of 2 players don't match, doesn't mean it's not a dupe. I've nailed numerous players that didn't have an IP match that were dupes, and I handled the situation the same as if the IP had been a perfect matched. Catching a bot offender would be much easier than that.

Corp infiltration is an issue, but as much with live players as with dupes. Main thing is to know who you are corping with, and that is why it is sometimes hard for new players to get into a corp.

I really don't like dupes and have never done that (even tho as some like to say about different things "the game allows it"). Still, dupes within a corp in light of the (nearly) always AFK botting doesn't seem much different.

Seems like I remember an alias from a few years ago: Corp Assassin or something very similar that would backstab whoever allowed him to corp.

Corporate Killer, lol. Yea, I remember him.

The thing about corps is to corp on games that are less than busy. Find an out-of-the-way game where you can take a few new players and play w/ them. Learn their schedule, figure out their strengths and weaknesses, etc. If they backstab you there, never corp w/ them again. Easy solution.

It's an F'n truce game dude, don't be lame. Tell you what, when RP bangs a new non-truce unlim... show up there. I'll see if he can make it a subzero or something you'll know.

I apologize ahead of time for jumping into this topic and going in a different direction from the current discussion.

Thrawn has been on deployment and will not be returning until 15-Aug. I have spoken to him to let him know how things here at the homefront are going and passed on messages from our kids to him. I've also told him I saw your post and he replied he misses all the people in the TW community. He is looking forward to returning soon.

Sorry, went to the casino tonight after posting the script on grimy. Didn't leave any money with them and brought home enough of theirs to make it a very nice night.
