I've noticed ppl mention that TW is capable of greater than 20k sectors. My question is why have we yet to see one? 20k Sectors is plenty, but a larger universe might be interesting to play.

I think the main reason, is that JP is concentrating on stability and bugs of twgs first before he goes and adds new settings like a larger universe and so forth.

TW is technically capable of supporting universes up to some 60,000 sectors. But don't expect it to be available as a big bang option for quite some time. The demand and the need for more than 20,000 sectors just isn't there.

Also, you might be surprised about that lack of demand. The way Unlimited Turn type of games are going, a larger universe would be a nice addition. I can easily imagine an Unlimited Turn game with 50k sectors being immensely popular.

I don't believe that a 50,000 sector game would make much of a difference in most unlimited turn games these days, other than extend it from an hour or two in length to maybe a day tops. Besides, aside from the change in code, you're talking about tripling the number of port and nebula names. That wouldn't be a fun job.

There's really no point to having more than 20k sectors, though. There isn't any good reason that I can think of that would be worth the work it would take. There isn't a single problem with gameplay, whether in low turn games or unlimited turn games that can't be solved by well-balanced edits. Making the universes larger won't make any difference in the world.

Well, It might take longer to find an enemy's base. Of course, u could link this Larger universe idea with the multiple universes idea. The 60000 sectors could be devided in 3 seperate universes....each with different Aliens, Stardock, Political ALignments etc... Lets say you'd have to pay a 1mil toll to get to the other universe...once there, it would be similar but different gameplay....I.E.
Universe #1 : Controled by the federation.
Universe #2 : Controled by the ferrengi.
Universe #3 : Controled by the Borg.
Each universe would have different challenges but equally different opportunities. The Wormhole for the different universes could also be hidden as a sysop option.
Just an idea.
