I may be wrong but I think I posted a script just like you want in my pack at grimeys.

Check it out.

I don't even see any cashing scripts in your script pack, much less a script "just like" one that we're talking about.

Well I can say this...
Unintentional or not, that last post sounded extremly rude and mean and nasty.
Forget help from me

What is perceived by one is all that matters. I would have taken it the same way. Too many people want scripts given to them, but they will not take the time to learn anything about writing a script.

The thread started out basically trashing the free scripts from a free application as not doing what the poster wanted. The same tone will not cause anyone to wish to help a person that comes off that way - either with scripts, scripting help, or game play. It would make me tend to want to help that person out of a game if I come across them though.

Oh, I see what you did there Prom, very clever. Took me a sec.

The good rabbi should have learned a long time ago that a harsh word stirs up wrath. But a little flattery, stroking an ego here and there, goes a long way towards getting what you want.

If you want scripters to give of their time to help you, you are going to have to do a better job of making them feel appreciated.

I'm not asking for scripting help. I have a degree in CS, and I'm a C# developer. I just posted this thread because I hadn't seen where anyone else had mentioned deficiencies in the TWXProxy scripts. Just because something is free doesn't mean that you can't point out where it can be improved. Likewise, just because you point out the flaws in something doesn't mean you don't think it's great.

Enough derail! Thanks to everyone that's being constructive.

EP, do you think the Pack 2 Includes are so deprecated that it would be better just to create new scripts?

Yes and no.

No, because most of the Pack 2 includes work fine, yet were written before some of the language constructs were developed (like while loops). I spent a few minutes last night and updated a couple to better represent the current state of TWX scripting techniques. Performing this "modernizing" of the Pack 2 scripts and includes accomplishes the basic need that I see, which is having scripts which are themselves good and valid examples.

Yes, because some of the scripts in Pack 2 are quite complex, with numerous includes chained through various dependencies. Rewriting any one of those would require a high degree of familiarity with the includes. For me at least, it would be wiser to create functionally equivalent includes using my own scripting style, rather than studying Xide's until I gained the necessary familiarity.

In the end, a "Pack 3" version of most of the Pack 2 scripts seems to be the way to go, along with modernizing (but not functionally altering) the existing Pack 2 versions.

All, let's keep it constructive. Also, please make sure any comments (especially unconstructive ones) have less quotes and are more concise. I just hate scrolling excessively for needless quotes and requotes.

Do you think there's anything that can be added to the TWXProxy scripting language to help facilitate modularity? I don't know what all you've added, but I'm gonna grab the TWXProxy code and start getting familiar with it.

There are a lot of private scripts out there, but they're private... and you won't get them this way. Most people that feel a need to "improve" a free public script just do so privately, they rarely end up public. There's way more to writing scripts than just writing the code tho. A bit of game skill goes into writing anything clever.

Rebuilding the pack 2 scripts (into a pack 3) to make them more effective and bug-free in today's games would take a great deal of time and effort. Where's the motivation for that now?

As for what EP has added, I'm just grateful the package is still maintained.

Motivation: Someone could create a pack 3 script package with the perfect scripts and sell them for the low price of $5 per script. ;P Maybe that would reflect the appreciation needed for the hard work involved in creating such scripts.

One thing that could be added that I think would help is a "function" capability to return a value rather than having to use the BASIC type gosub command. At least the code would be easier, IMO, to read and work with. I have yet to figure out a "clean" way to emulate a reusable function that returns a value.

I end up with something similar to the following:

setVar $temp $xyz
gosub :update
setVar $xyz $temp
setVar $temp $abc
gosub :update
setVar $abc $temp
...

## goSubs ##
:update
....
return
