Hello there...

I was unable to find any information about the differences between the "common"- and the gold-version. I used to play tradewars quite a lot in the good old bbs-days. Now it is the first i heard of a windows-compatible version. So i decided to try setting up a server with the unregistered version to get a closer look on it.
But all i got is "Error binding player listener (10048)" as an error message in w2k advanced server.

Now i think, 80$ (in case of gold-version) are too much to spent for a software from which i don´t know how it looks and if it runs..

Any ideas??

The gold version allows you to edit ships, planets, create custom alien races, have greater control over universe creation, and change some additional game settings.

In the TWGS configuration, you need to set the Server as "local" with a Telnet address of 127.0.0.1:2002, and configure your Telnet client to ping that address. After you BigBang and set up a game in TWGS, you can "play" the game on your own PC as if you were logging in remotely. I have my own local games I use to test settings and tactics, so I know this works. Set up the URL configuration, start TWGS, then start your Telnet client (I use ZOC), and do a munual login to 127.0.0.1:2002. The Telnet client should find the TWGS server, allow you to login to TWGS, start a game, and play it just like you would remotely on a dial-up or Telnet BBS

I can tell you for a fact that it runs. It's a matter of setting it up properly. You can have it listen on any port that is not in use. Since port 2002 is not used by any known common service, that's a good port to use.

TWGS, Gold or otherwise, is going to look exactly like the old TW game did---same colors, same ansi graphics, same ASCII art, same colors, etc. What's changed is that the sysop can edit more things than in the older game, and the game now works by telnet instead of logging into a BBS.

Unfortunately, the evaluation version is very limited. It limits player sessions to 3 minutes maximum, and you can't enable any of the Gold features. So I'll give you an idea of what the Gold version does:

1) Customizable planets: You can change various settings (citadel upgrade requirements, number of colonists needed to produce a product, amount of product that can be stored, etc.) on each of the default planets, and you can also create your own planets from scratch or base them on existing planets and edit them to your liking.

2) Customizable ships: You can change the settings on the default ships or create your own ships. They're fully configurable.

3) Customizable aliens. You can make the existing aliens and Ferrengi stronger or weaker, or get rid of them altogether, they're very customizable as to their behavior, and you can also create your own alien races. You can create special ships for the aliens to use that humans can't use, or you can have them use the default ships. Also the aliens in the Gold version are much smarter and much more formidable than the ones in the old version were.

4) Universe size: In the non-gold version 5,000 sectors is the maximum universe size allowed. In the gold version, you can create universes up to 20,000 sectors.

There are other changes. The best way to find out would be to go to a few servers and take a look at the ship specifications in a few games. The bottom line is that if you're going to buy TWGS, be sure to get everything offered (gold, 100 nodes, TWGS, etc.) and don't cut corners on price.
