Post subject:  Day Date

I have been playing for years.
When I got to a server , in USA or Australia .. or anywhere to be precise
I type CT for the server time .. it gives the year (future) and a day .. tuesday
maybe .. but the server is actually (real day) may be monday

I talked with Archie and he told me the year that the day = our current real day.
I dont recall what that was now .. I'm sure someone can pipe in on that ..
I think it was 2033 maybe ...

So what I'm saying is if I checked on a server and sysop said he will rebang on friday .. the CT will show that today is thursday and tomorrow he rebangs.

The actual day = real server actual day.

This should not effect the game.
But will make it better understood for day date coronations.

TIA

I think the date/time that should be used is the one that is provided by TWGS. Currently you can get it with the $ command from the main menu. I could also provide a specific time/date function so you can see what server time is and what timezone it is in without having to deal with the full dump of game info.

The in-game time/date is meant to be different from real-life.

I understand the year has to be different , but why does the server time and day have to be different .. oh time is same .. humm
So why the day ?

This was asked to me on Team Speak by a French user in Europe this weekend.

I'm sorry for asking about this .. I dont want you to bother adding an extra 200 lines of code to display server time /day just to fix a 2 digit year change that a edit/search an replace could do for a programmer in a matter of a minute or less.

Dont bother with this , as I told him .. its was beyond the original programmer
understanding of an international game.

no dis .. just a fact.

I seem to remember this discussion coming up before. If I recall the difference in the weekday is because the game year is different from the current year and November, 5th in 2023 falls on a Sunday instead of a Saturday as is does in 2011.

Vid is talking about crossing the international date-line.

But, if the sysop is using the new option to open a game at a future date/time then no matter where in the world you are when you try to enter a game it will tell you how many days/hours/minutes until the game opens, not the date it will open.

Hope this helps.

It also shows the time zone:

This game will open in 20 hours and 55 minutes.

Game Title: Babalon 5
Start Date: 11/06/2011
Start Time: 08:00 pm (Eastern Daylight Time)

Selection (? for menu):

Actually you not following :

Back in the BBS days TW2002 had the year 2002
but since then the year was increased to accommodate the future tense of the game.

And in the tw2002 the day was wrong as well , and no one cared.
Now that we have the year ajusted to seem future .. why not make it so day = your today day ?

This has nothing to do with international date line .. its just that if someone far far away was to check their day .. and you say you rebang on wensdays .. they can see its so many days away based on a common day to you.

Its enough that players have to calc hours , this makes since to me.

If nothing gets changed or ops don't agree with this .. I could do like all other sysops who want their extern to be easier on players by setting the Server year ahead by I think 2 or 3 years .. I'll have to fiddle with that.

Then I'll have a reason to run 2 TWGS's .. comments welcome ..

It's always been this way, something about a story line. I think JP has it in the wiki. And the year 2023 isn't really "our" 2023 but some really far off distant year.

All a part of the sci-fi fantasy portion of this game. Game dates are intentionally this way.

That probably was 21 years ago then.

And I'm sorry, we're not to debate whether this is good or not, just a suggestion to change the date in TW to reflect today's date is what's being requested, right?

Post subject:  Re: Day Date

actually to reflect todays DAY is the request.
and the way to do this is to advance the year ...

Post subject:  Re: Day Date

The game date is actually aged by the difference between 2002 and the time when the game was first released, and the day is the proper day on the calender for that year. I know it is confusing. I was suggesting that the TWGS server date and time would be a better thing to check. Really, the purpose of the game time/date is just to tell you time of day, and also so you can take into account things like hump-day special at ports.

Post subject:  Re: Day Date

I agree and understand that all that was done was age the date in game to the future and the day is correct for it ...
This is why I was suggesting to increase the future so it reflects our Day day.

we had a discussion on how to do this once to figure all things worked .. leap year and all.

It would be 1000's of time easier then writing anything extra .. not to mention you solution to use $ as something . . well I think only an experienced scripter might be the only one who can parse the $ screen .. unless they are not using twx proxy.

enough of this .. do as you like ..
no matter , there are more important things to do .. like bugs that have always been.

I think my takeaway from this is that there should be an obvious date/time displayed on the server when you connect, and/or a function to show it. I definitely agree with you that it's good to be able to tell what the actual date and time is on the server you're playing at.

Thanks for making the recommendation.

Post subject:  Re: Day Date

I'm not sure that was where I was going with this .. but anyways .. if you did that ..
how will this get the real time for the server location .. there are a few sysops that set there time ahead to another time zone to make extern more pleasant
for their players.

eg. an east coast server setting their time so that extern is earlier then midnight ..but the server reports it like midnight.

now for your idea to work , it has to have a GPS in computer to set actual time/place.
