Unread post Starting own server
Hi my name is Derek Ridley. I use to play tradewars a long time ago faithfully. Me and my family would like to start playing. What do I need to do in order to put local 2 Terabyte drive, and set it up. I understand need to pay for nodes and games. I just need to fully understand how this is done. Also, I use Swath.net and Rexx/Zocs Scripts. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Download TWGS and install it on the PC you want to act as server, make sure you know what port it is going to run through, usually 23 or 2002. From there you would need to put in the IP address of that PC and port # on the other PCs so that they can connect to it. You might need to make some entries in your firewall on the host PC, depending on if you have it turned on or not. What OS are you running on the host PC?

I'm using windows 10 from laptop for now. My brother from mississipi is trying to connect but cant. I gave him IP address and port number from Stats page in TWGS.

I have an external drive that is 2 terabyte . the drive stands alone by itself. is it possible to just put the server on that drive. not sure if the TWGS server would stay on or would I need a pc always on run it. Because the external drive stays on by itself.

Also, what do I need to do with firewall? open up a port?

It's a bit more complicated than that! Lol!

To host your own game, you would first download TWGS (Tradewars Game Server) here:
http://www.eisonline.com/downloads/

Download the one that says "TWGS220B.EXE"

Install it on your computer. The unregistered version is fully operational, but you can only have one game at a time on it, and only one person can login at a time. Registration costs vary, but the highest you'll pay is $100. This full registration price allows you to create up to twenty-five games and have up to one hundred people on at once (100 nodes.)

Practice with TWGS before you decide to register.

If you decide to register, the setup is "simple" in how it's done. But it's obviously not going to be simple to someone who's never done it. One thing at a time! Lol!

Jumping in here rather than starting a new thread, since the original question is more or less what I'm wanting to do.

I'm wanting to host a game for a few select friends. So, a private game instead of public one. You know, to keep y'all from coming in and kicking our butts too much.

I've downloaded and played a bit. Just registered and added a 2nd game slot and a few nodes.

I think I'm ready for this part but really have no idea what to do. How do I get my friends into my game? Is there anything I need to do to limit who can join?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Jake,

You need to open port 2002 in your firewall. This is different depending on what model you have:
Netgear: https://portforward.com/netgear/ac1600-c6250emr/
Linksys: https://portforward.com/linksys/wrt3200acm/

There are hundreds more on that site, so they will have specific directions for your specific router.

You also need to make sure port 2002 is open in Windows Firewall:
http://www.tomshardware.com/faq/id-3114 ... ndows.html

Since you most likely have a dynamic IP, you will want to use a dynamic dns service, so your friends can still connect when the IP changes:
https://www.noip.com/

In the TWGS game settings, you can set a "Game Password". No one can get into the game without the password.

or, you can just PM me and I will setup a private game slot for you and your friends on my server. In fact, just about any of the active GameOPS will do that for you.
