Unread post Total Newb, setting up server
I'm completely new to TWS, and in fact it's older than me.

I'm trying to set up a server hosted on a website (but for now my PC) and have my friends connect via LAN.

I got the Trade Wars server that this website told me to download, and I had fun playing by myself. I'm not sure how others connect to the server, or where to start.

I KNOW I'm missing a huge step, any links to help sites or a nudge in the right direction is much obliged. I'll start with figuring what software I need and my friends need and hopefully go from there.

Sorry about the lack of knowledge, when browsing this forum everyone already knows so much there's alot of gaps for me to figure out.

Thanks a bunch for any help

There are a number of ways to connect to a server, but the most basic is a telnet client. Are you familiar with running telnet?

Assuming you can connect to TWGS via telnet, which is no different from connecting to any BBS or text-based game like a MUD, then all you need to do is bring TWGS online and connect to its IP or address with telnet. You can always do it locally using 127.0.0.1 or "loopback". From the LAN, you'll need to use either the LAN ip address or the computer's name on your network.

If TWGS reports an error in the Log screen when you bring it online, then we'll need to figure out why.

Are your friends coming to you house and getting on your LAN/wi-fi to connect to your TWGS?

Or are they at their own homes trying to connect via the internet?

Examine the settings for your router, you'll need to open port 23 and if your router has the option to setup for gaming, use that setting as well.

If they are local, then the IP address is 127.0.0.1.

If they are coming from the internet, you may want to register your IP address with http://dyn.com/dns/. It's free, and you don't need to pay for a static IP from your ISP. Then you can choose a cool name for them to connect to. You may need to enter this DNS in your router as well.

It's great to see people younger than this game taking an interest!

Welcome!

First, you need an address that others can connect to. This could be a static IP address, but if you have a typical home connection with a dynamic IP, you'll probably need to get a dynamic host name from a service like DynDNS.

Second, if your server is behind a firewall/router (which it should be) you'll need to forward incoming connections on the router's public/Internet-facing address to the address of the server on your private network. This is called port forwarding or NAT. You can usually configure it in the Web admin interface of your router.

Sounds Great, thanks for the quick replies.

I have the EIS Tradwars downloaded from this site, and my friends are connection via a program called Hamachi, which lets you connect over the internet as if it was LAN. I've gotten people to connect from their home, but I can only get one person on at a time.

Anyone know why this is? We've got a few guys right now playing with it.. and speedy replies would be very much appreciated.

Thanks again guys, super excited!

Ah.. Hamachi - the screen sharing software? Yeah, that's not going to work, only one person at a time can access the game from the desktop, and that's you the sysop. :)

You need to have a router that's going to direct them from the internet to your IP address at port 23 to access TWGS.

Do you have to pay for more people to join your server? Or am I mistaken

Yeah, the unregistered version only allows one connection at a time.

Makes sense. Paid for, waiting for confirmation. Any idea how long this takes?

I thought they got 4 connections before they had to pay for more.

4 games/4 nodes is the freebie for those who registered the door version back in ancient times.

Who you calling ancient? ;) I think we registered RiverCity in 1990-91 from Castle Ravenloft if I remember correctly.
