A maybe not so simple question
I'm wondering what people think of sysops playing on their own server. Not trying to start another forums war, which is why I posted this here, and not in Smack.
Opinions please.

Depends on if he's telling you or not.

Opinions please. As a majority it's frowned upon. I am sure most would agree with me. There are more than enough twgs's to go around for everyone. Why play on your own? Most players won't even touch a game or server where the sysop plays. It's also just a smart way to save your reputation and from being accused of cheating or editing.. Just ask Stoneslinger Happen to him!

There is a style of game that I prefer to play that is unavailable as far as I can tell. I have seen several that if various elements from each were combined, would come close, but nothing quite like what I am looking for. It would require entirely too much of a sysop's time for me to request someone else to create it for me. The rules would clearly state when the game would be edited after bigbang, under what conditions, and the edits that would be made. As for being accused of cheating, I've never really been one to care what others think of me personally. Not to mention that there are some people who, upon their first experience becoming #SD# (or their 1,000,000th time), will scream cheat as loudly as they can. So that is not really a concern to me.

Create the edit and have someone else host it.

I understand what you are saying. I know that most don't care what others think about them. Suggestion though. Don't play on your own server unless you are very open about it and expect some backlash. Furthermore, if people start running you through the mud i.e. cheating blah blah blah and what else not. You could find yourself with an empty twgs or people not wanting to corp with you in any other game.
IMO

The issue is the sysop involvement required to ensure that anyone who is logged in is actually at the keys. I would be willing to put in the time required for that, but I can't very well ask another sysop to put in that kind of time. Consider the amount of time you spend running SilverWings. Would you have the extra time, or be willing to spend the extra time if you had it, to monitor the activity, verify that users are indeed at the keys randomly, and edit them, or their corp, out of the game if they were not?

Comet I would be as open and transparent with it as the game would allow me. I figure the server would be fairly empty, since I would be trying to combine some of the modern play with the old BBS "run your turns and get off" mentality. As for corping, the HHT is the first time I have tried being in a corp since way back in the BBS days, when I would corp with my then girlfriend. (Someone has some major trust issues, but I won't mention my name). So I am used to playing a solo game.

Put a time limit on the game (say 6 hours) and if they are in the game they will most likely be at the keys if that's what you are concerned about.

This past week, we worked M-F. Some weeks we work M-S. And once in a while, a day off is something to be dreamed about. On days that I work, I can play maybe 4 hours. Today, I could have easily spent 13 hours so far playing, and will probably be closer to 16 hours before I go to bed. And tomorrow looks pretty much the same, since I have no plans, except for taking the trash to the curb. (I admit, I have no life. I also admit that I like it that way.)

Re: A maybe not so simple question
A sysop has no way to tell if i am at keys or in the john nor is it relevant. You can turn off the # online system and then no one knows who is in game or not until a fig is hit if that is the kind of thing that turns u on.

Opinions please. I have played games with the server sysop. As long as your players respect you, and you are 100% above board honestly playing, and open about it. (Don't try to hide under a dupe account.) You'll be fine. There will always be those paranoid few who assume if you do well you MUST be using tedit, you don't need those type on your server anyway.

Re: A maybe not so simple question
I still don't know he intends on booting those that are not "at keys" without a time limit and without using tedit.
Maybe someone can explain this whole thing because I am confused.

Re: A maybe not so simple question
How do you determine who is at keys actively playing ? I can think of just a few ways .. but most of them would have in game messages.
hitting figs , or making the dailies .. other then that requires an admin account ..
I'm talking about a spot check with SPY mode , to see if they are active ? Well that is cheating if you are playing on your own server.
And the edit you request .. can be played on any server , with the exception of not allowing for game squatting.
Why so paranoid about that ? It is topical for players to log in and stay online. I'm sure that was the intention to TWX proxy script pack 1 script called 1_keepalive
My take is a SysOp should play on other servers if he wants to keep his server out of the line of fire and be a respected server , unless he has a game dedicated and marked as a teaching/training game in which he plays.
just my 2¢

Re: A maybe not so simple question
I still don't get it.
Either its a timed game or it isn't.
How would u write a sysop script for "at keys"
I would just auto relog back in if kicked off.
Would I be allowed 5 minutes to go to the loo?
Where is the line? I am kicked off for the day? Character removed?
I think i will just play the game as designed. All this weirdness is too much for my little head
