Well to answer your first question. Neither/Both. It all depends on edits. There are games were I have had an all blue corp (Killer Instinct, Chess), and games were I have almost all reds (usually bad planets, expensive ships which don't require commish). The game is all based on playing to how the edits are written.

Theres a hidden option from the main menu, the one that looks like this:

Instead of hitting T to enter the game hit *, it will give you a listing of the game settings.

The ship and planet edits you either have to find out for yourself or talk the sysop into posting them.

in the game hit "c" then "c" and hope (most edits are) that the information is available on the ships. Also, you can hit "c" and then "j" for planetary specs. You start at the command prompt and do it. This depends on whether or not the editor has posted the changes, most established edits are shown. Also as Psion posted you can hit "*" for an unabridged list of the parameters of the game and "s" for a brief description. Hope that helps. Most op's post in the title, i.e. "<S> Subzero 20k/Unlim" etc....
also pay attention to whether in MBBS mode or not.

There is no set server or game like that, but ask around in various games and on here and you can probably find someone to help you out. As to the pictures, I think you're referring to avatars. Edit your profile and you can select one there.

I personally love Trillian, Let's you chat aim, Icq, Yahoo and even MSN all at the same time with one chat program.. Never have any issues with it either.
