Hey All,
Its probably been about 12 years since I've played Trade Wars. Was feeling nostalgic the other day and was thinking about breaking out my old copy of WWIV and setting up Trade Wars and some of the other old door games. Before I did that thou I decided to go poke around on the internet, and to my suprise you crazy bastards are still playing the game! hehehe..

The problem is that when I used to play I would make a couple of pretty basic scripts with Telix and that was about it, plus I don't ever remember playing a game where more than one person could be in at a time.

Soooo, to my question. Is there a good tutorial or a site with good info for the total newbs? I need definitions of some of the new terms. I need to know about the different versions of the game, basic strategies, everything. I need the Idiots guide to playing tradewars in 2004.

And yes, I have been looking this stuff up on the internet. Problem is that I either find an ancient sight that is still on line with updates and articles from '96.. Or I find sites that have good info, but only if you allready have a basic knowledge of TradeWars today..

Thanks all!!!!

try http://www.tw-cabal.com -- apart from that, just start playing in some games (look in the rebangs section of these forums), and try to get some experienced players to let you on their corp...

Actually, I've spent the last few hours there. About an hour after my post I stumbled across that site.. That helped TONS, and it will take me FOREVER to get through it all, but I'm working on it..

I have two questions more at this point thou.. What does TWGS stand for?

And are most people playing big tournament with tons of people playing all day everyday, or is there a big community of people still playing in doors where there are only a couple of people on at a time?

I'm curious about that second one cause a lot that I'm reading talks about people spending several hours every day doing stuff and it almost sounds like they stay logged in with scripts running 24x7.. Maybe thats just the way I'm reading it thou..

Thanks!

There are servers like that, but they are hard to find. Usually, they are not advertised, so not to draw the script kiddies

There is alot of that going on in all the places I play. I tend to run scripts 24/7 as well. Although, mine are simple, some people run bots. Bots are simply a script that allows a team (corp) member to command your player ro do something.

If you want to be highly competitve, then good scripts, a program that can use macroes, and a fast connction is a must.

Welcome back. In case you do not know, Telix for Windows was released in the mid 90's and is now freeware. SALT II is more or less identical to SALT (DOS version).

Not many of us use it any more :(

Well, its been a while since I've used Telix. I currently use SecureCRT for work, but I haven't yet needed to run any scripts with it. Anyone know if SecureCRT will work with the scripts that are out there?

And thanks for the warm welcome, and the good info all.. Anyone have any thoughts for a good place for me to find a corp that would accept a newb apprentice?

-Cheers

There aren't any public SecureCRT scripts out there. I imagine you could write some (I think it uses vbs), but I haven't ever heard of anyone having any made for it.

Hi there, route SecureCRT through TWX Proxy:

http://www.twxproxy.com/

Use TWX scripts instead.

gl, and welcome back to the game. A few apps to look into to help you play are SWATH, ATTAC, and Zoc (not really pretty but works well). TWX as mentioned has some of the best public scripts available. I don't have Cherokee's site, but that is a good place to find some scripts.

You will want to check out http://www.twxproxy.com and take a look at twx. http://www.scripterstavern.com and tavern.homeip.net/twgs/ both have tons of good scripts for twx.

You may also want to look at SWATH. (another helper that you can pipe through twx). http://www.swath.net

using scripts without game knowledge is akin to driving through the desert alone in a junky car and not knowing jack about how an engine works. i would suggest you progress in the following manner:

A) reintroduce yourself to map theory - understanding what a ztm is, how it affects game play, etc is important
B) learn as much as you can about TWGS events - ie, order of events and what effects those events have on the source of the event. a simple example is the order of events when entering a sector, with all the permutations available to that particular event (eg enemy planets, mines, enemy figs, etc). Being able to predict the precise order and magnitude of events is key to staying alive in many situations.
C) learn how to determine what the edits are and what effect they have on the ability to cash/aquire resources. As most competitive corps will tell you, the game is 40% math, 50% execution, and 10% luck. If you go into a game not knowing the best way to cash, you are already way behind.

These three tasks can all be accomplished without the use of scripts, but if you have a reasonably good understanding of them, your ability to pick and use scripts will be greatly enhanced. Don't let people talk you into the mindset that the game is all about who can pod other players the best. Getting podded has many beneficial results for the podded player if it is done in a controlled manner. The ability to kill other players does no good when the other player is smarter. g/l
