The in-game TW help states that the original port builder will receive a cut of the profits of that port.
Does anyone know what the exact calculation is for making money off a port in this way?

Try it yourself - build a port, and then when it asks you what class of port you want, hit "H" for help...it's the last line of that help screen.

It's probably leftover text from when the game was first made. Might have been something that was planned to be implemented and never was.
