 Ship Damage calculation

How do you calculate the amount of damage needed to destroy a ship by cannon fire. Also, is the amount of damage a cannon causes equal to
Ore amount times percent setting divided by 3 for sector shot and Ore amount times percent setting divided by 2 for atmosphere shot ?
