Post subject:  Current Status of TW

Hello, all.

Long time lurker on the boards, here. A few of my friends and I have been playing TW continuously since the 90's, running it on PCBoard back in the day, to now hosting it in Azure. Amazing how far this game has gone. We've gone from being crazy teenagers playing BBS games, to fathers...still playing BBS games. :)

Anyways, I wanted to post here to find out from some of you long-timers, what the current status of TW is? As in, is the game still actively being worked on?

In short, my post is more of a "make sure this game never dies," not a "something is wrong and I need support." My buddies and I have loved this game for many years; I finally got around to creating an account, just to see where things were with game - behind the scenes.

Thanks all.

The last release was March 5, 2012. When JP started working for RSI on Star citizen, all work on TW2002 stopped. JP is no longer working for RSI now, but has not returned to TW2002.

Ah - that stinks. I noticed, from prying around the board, JP hasn't been here since 2015. Does anyone speak with him still? I'd hate for this place to just die off... :/

Just keep on playing and TW will never die.

On it...

True, but it can't evolve either. JP can't currently compile TW2002, because the Delphi 4 compiler will not run on any currently available operating system.

Nothing wrong with keeping the classic game in tact.

As long as Stein & Eje keep supporting Swath I think we're in good shape. If the Swath servers both stopped working, a lot of people wouldn't know how to find and load a telnet program.

That being said... if JP really wants to get rich, he needs a team to move TW into the high graphic MOOC realm. It blows my mind that kids are earning 6 figures playing a video game.

So the redeeming issue with XP is it is the only platform that can run delphi.
That makes me happy to hear.
Tell J.P. if he need to compile it , he can have access to my system with Tean View
and then he can delete everything from it off my system when done.
That way WE All get an updated TWGS . I hope with an active BotLink
(That too updated).

Delphi is actually still under development and active. Delphi 10 runs fine on Windows 10, but TW will not compile under it.

So, as most of you are already acutely aware, due to my well-known modesty and lack of any sort of showmanship, I have created a fully functional TWXC decompiler.

The better news for everyone is that all of this was done by porting the TWX source from Delphi to C#, and while it took a while to get the hang of it (prior to three weeks ago, I had never coded in or even looked at either Delphi or C#), I am pretty easily able to migrate this code now.

So, it is my intention to release a fully ported C# version of TWX 2.06a (Micro's latest build, my starting point) sometime later this year. No commitments on time because I do have a day job and other non TW hobbies. And while the TCP sockets code and the database code might be a little more work, but I don't expect it to be that bad.

I know Delphi lives on, but C# is the most reasonable language to code a WIndows app in these days. I've thought about using C++ so it's more portable, but frankly I find the C++ syntax and structure painfully ugly, and C# allows me to write C-like code which I am familiar with. Also, there are libraries to allow C# to compile and run on Linux, MacOS and other platforms.

I know this doesn't help with the core TWGS code, but a healty TWX is helpful for the community. And I hope we'll eventually get a newer TWGS as well.

Just an open ended question. What is to stop a few of the programmer types around here from getting together and creating an updated modern version of TW? Clearly, you couldn't call it TW, but I bet there's enough talent to pull it off.

Back in the day, nearly every BBS had their own version of TradeWars and the museum lists 8-10 people that made different versions or competitors.

Is the TradeWars name copyrighted? Could someone release a "TradeWars 2300" or "TradeWars 2222" without being sued?

Is any source code available--for any version?

I started playing other versions and some have features I wish that TW2002 had.

TW1000 and others will give you a full port report just from the game!

I am sure that a coder type could make their own version, which could continue to be developed, even if it passes hands more often than TWX-Proxy, but they must be too busy playing games with graphics.

Hey Micro, are you back to fighting strength?
