# Do not hint at arguing in this topic, yer be warned... #

There has been some talk around opening a "Tournament" forum since we have had a bit of chat and tournies lately I would like to open up this discussion.

Rules:
1.) We are not nominating or ruling out mods here, don't even bring it up.
2.) THIS IS STRICTLY for new forum chat, nothing else.
3.) Please follow rules 1 & 2

Who is interested in such a forum and why?

What could we call it?

Rules?

I am interested.
Also Vid is interested but he doesn't monitor open discussion so he probably won't see this.

If you would let him know.

Could you post a few reasons why you think we should have a forum for Tournament talk? I saw the mention in another thread and thought the idea was interesting but would like to get a few reasons to pass along to JP.

Reasons:

1) A lot of people don't monitor open discussions because of the off topic threads.
2) It would be easier for the moderator to keep the posts related to tournament discussion only if the rules stated "Tournament Discussion Only".
3) Hopefullly the threads would be less likely to get locked because of off topic discussion.

I would like to see a thread dedicated to each tournament while its runnig, I agree this should be something that only the corps/players that are playing can access!!!! The biggest problem is people throwing their 2 cents into the current open tournament threads which get them lock!!! Iam sick and tired of hearing "well if I was playing this is what I would have done was." those comments belong it another thread!!

I'm not aware of a way to limit access to a particular post. So I don't know if we could have a thread for a particular Tournament and limit those who can post in that thread. We could open a major forum area for tournaments and then a new forum for each tournament that starts, granting limited posting rights for each forum, but the number of forums in that group would grow too large after a few years. So I think our options are somewhat limited there.

I think the best thing would just be to have a tournament forum with a thread for each running tournament, with a rule that says posts need to be limited to the ongoing activity of that forum. If someone posts off-topic, prune the post.

But I definitely agree that it would be useful to have a controlled area for active tournaments.

Things that would be nice for this:

Announce Tournament
Signup Teams
Signup for Draft Players
Setting Changes
Request for Changes

@6am that's about all I can think of. Would it be a current mod or will there be a new position opening for this area?

I'm in favor, and for ideas much like T0yman stated.

In general discussion people take liberties and the value of the information determining the tournament settings, play, and stuff like that gets diluted. Some don't even monitor open discussion.

It should contain absolutly zero smack, but discussion can revolve around settings and gameplay

I was thinking more along the lines that who ever is hosting/ or setting up the tournament can watch over the room for that given tournament.(almost like a conference room) There is only one or two tournaments every 4 months. If your not in the game they shouldnt be allowed to come in and or view whats issues are going on in the tournament, if you want to know that bad get a team together and join or get it from the grapevine!!! Its very easy you make a user group just like the the ones at the bottom, only invite the players from the tournament give the tournament director the mod/user gruop leader permission for that group. Once that tournments over clear the group, and so on.

I think you missed the point of the whole thing!! All those are things that can be talked about in an open thread viewable by everyone!! I am pretty sure Vid,Bigd, and myself had something more in mind of a group set up for each tournament where only can be used by the corps playing in it!!!

Lets be realistic. Those things can be part of the forum as well. I think what a few of you had in mind was a tourny ONLY forum where the players of the tourny can post updates and discuss said tourny. I think its a cool idea to have only tournament players active in the forum, I think all forum members should be able to read updates though. This is a public forum, as are the tournaments.

Sorry, I did miss that point, and to clarify I think what he's askin it for "corps playing" to be able to discuss stuff in game, without input from those not in the game, not really having a clue what's happening in the game.
Having been an admin at this site at one time, I know that to set permissions for that although not impossible, would be a pain to do.

I was thinking about how to do that kind of thing, TheButcher. Seems like the way to do that is to have a major forum area for tournaments, then open sub-forums for each tournament as it comes along. We'd need to assign a moderator to that forum (the one running the tournament, I guess), and assign privileges for the forum to those in the tournament. A few downsides of this are

a) it's going to be difficult to manage
b) We don't want to throw away posts after the tournament ends, so what do we do with those forums? Just keep grown the list of forums? I know there aren't a lot of tournaments, but over time that list is going to grow pretty large. Maybe there's a way to delete a forum and shift posts into one "finished tournaments" forum? I'm thinking that might be possible with this forum software. If that's possible, then you'd have a forum for one or two active tournaments, with limited posting rights and unlimited viewing rights, then one forum that contains closed posts for all previous tournament forums. I think that's probably possible, but issue A still remains. This is going to be difficult to manage.

Iam being realistic mob, as Jp just stated it is very possible. I wouldnt mind seeing a section for tournament talk that is public, but would be nice to have an area that is cut off from the rest of the "2 cent " posters that is strictly tournament specific for the teams playing to post and discuss.
