I just added a list of the 40 oldest TWGS sites to the TW Museum.

http://wiki.classictw.com/index.php?tit ... _Site_List

Definitely some old-timers on that list!

Keep in mind this doesn't show actual uptime, just how long between the first activity and most recent activity of a site.

Have you installed the new version? Activation updates your records in my database so it knows your site is still active. This list is pulled directly from the database. The earliest date for your registration is 6/23/2005, so it's 6 years, definitely up there.

In 1985, I was running a registered version of Tradewars on "The Looking Glass BBS". I ran that BBS for about 4 years. Of course, you could only play one player at a time and the Ferrengi just floated around in the game doing nothing but blocking your way from time to time.

I remember that players could also make their own stardocks in a sector of their own choice.

and, of course, the whole game was flying online with a dial up 1200 baud modem. Didn't even know what scripting was back then!

Believe it or not, playing the game back then was great fun.

Unfortunately, the data I have in the database is limited to TWGS registrations, even though I probably have your original BBS registration on record somewhere.

Are either of these two BBSs yours?

http://wiki.classictw.com/index.php?tit ... king_Glass
http://wiki.classictw.com/index.php?tit ... ass_Online

And of course there's Mad Hatter's site, Through the Looking Glass

http://wiki.classictw.com/index.php?tit ... king_Glass

I know there are older sites than these, going back into BBS days. These are just the oldest TWGS sites.

LOL...I stand corrected...While I was playing as early as 1985, your reference jogged my memory ( thanks for that ). The server name was "Looking Glass Online" and I ran the BBS in the mid 1990's for about 4 years.

I bought the TW and gold codes before I bought the TWGS codes, of course that was long before TWGS existed. I also ran a bbs long long ago. I wish LORD would run under twgs too. laff

Interesting story about that... Some of you probably have heard this.

I met Gary working at Multi Service, which ran Metropolis BBS. We left together to work on games. A few years later, after I wrote TWGS, I wanted to put another game on it, so I approached Seth about LORD. A MONTH earlier he'd sold the rights, to MULTI SERVICE! (now Gameport). I kick myself for that soooo much. I really wanted to pair the two games up on my server. I think about putting other games on the server at some point.

thereverend.org has been online for years with a few interruptions. there is a post on my old website that says i brought the server back online in sept 2006, which means it was up before that... not sure when i first put it up. perhaps you know when i bought my codes.

You blocked it from the wayback machine with the robots.txt file, else could see when it started :(

huh. how do i fix that? not sure if it would help because thereverend.org technically didn't really exist until later. i think i was using rev.homeip.net in the early days. i can try tho.

Post subject:  Re: Oldest TWGS list

also, i don't think the list is *quite* right regarding the text description:

Quote:
These are the oldest TWGS sites as determined by the number of days from the day the site opened until the most recent day the site was active. This does not measure the true number of days the site has been online, as it would be impossible to provide that information for sites prior to TWGS v2. But if a site was opened 10 years ago and was running recently, even if it did not run for 10 years, it will be listed as 10 years old.

Only the top 40 oldest game sites are listed.

clearly, the top 40 oldest game sites should not include EIS TWGS which has been up for less than a year. the list doesn't even include fament. just sayin. and i'm not bitter about being left off the list or anything.

oh hi JP.

don't shoot the messenger.
