Unread post Help Me Return From a Long Hiatus
Quick background: I played this game like a fiend back in the mid-90's on a local BBS, including hosting some of my own games. I was reading an article earlier today about the "Top 10 Computer Games of All-Time" and sure enough TW2002 was listed. Well, after some searching, I was absolutely thrilled to find this game and community still thrives.

I would greatly appreciate the community's help in getting me back into the game.

1. Are there any centralized sites showing various hosts and available games? I'd really like to start in a high-turn, newbie-friendly environment where I can re-learn everything there is in the game.

2. What are the most basic starter mods/macros/scripts? I've begun with TWX Proxy and am getting the hang of it. When I used to play, the first priority was always mapping out the universe, looking for dead-ends, bubbles, trading pairs, etc. Any suggestions for a starter?

3. I ran the "Build" script that comes with TWX for awhile on a high-turn game. Watched it quite a bit to figure out what it was doing to kind of "reverse engineer" the gameplay. However, the thing is so robust and runs so quickly that I get a bit lost. Do a lot of people run this script? It seems everywhere I go I see 1 Figs dropped at a port, just like Build does.

I have a whole slew of other questions, but they're things I can figure out by playing the game again. I would really appreciate help just covering basics and setup so I can get back into the game using some basic scripts/helpers to get me going.

Thanks in advance!

That link shows all servers that are currently in the database. Only server I know that plays a building game is Ice 9, Games E & P.
Glad to see someone come back after time off, log on several servers and find a game mod you like there are plenty out there. If you don't see a mod you like send sysops a message I am sure someone will bang one for you.

Thanks for such a quick response, and it's good to be back. After only 2 hours realizing how much I used to enjoy playing this game.

Any suggestions on starter scripts/mods? "Build" is just way too automated for me to enjoy learning how to play. I'm looking for basics that'll do some exploration, map-out some good dead-ends for bases, and good port pairs.

Welcom back to TW. Look into Swath or Zoc... both helpers work with TWX but speed is the key these days. Fast or dead is pretty much the way. Look into the new and returning player games as T0yman suggested and work your way back into things. GL and see ya on the grid ;)
Oh.. swath http://www.swath.net

heh, build is the one script base builder, right? never actually used that one, but have read up on it. I'm sure it would only be used successfully in a truce type game.
For gameplay strategy I'd recommend checking out the tutorial section of http://www.navhaz.com ..there are a couple of good articles, one for returnee's and one on macro writing that are pretty helpful. He's also got the twcabal website archived, another must read for general strategy.
http://www.thestardock.com is the best for checking out the latest games and stats on the hottest servers.
http://www.grimytrader.com is an excellent source for scripts, also Lonestars download site has most twx scripts backed up.... http://www.psgygq.com

welcome back man!

Thanks much, greatly appreciated. I took your advice and started reading http://www.navhaz.com/dny_tw_tutorial.txt

Is it just me or does the document abruptly stopped halfway through a sentence under the "Bots" section?

Ok, after spending about 4 hours playing a few simple games, a more purposeful question...

-When starting a new game, regardless of # of turns, what is your suggested strategies for starting? Let's assume you don't get a map ahead of time.

I'm seeing it as mapping the universe as quickly as possible to begin looking for good deadends for bases. After that, what's the next step to making money and finding good paired ports? Is there a travel/scan script that will help begin building a database of them?

After money I'm assuming it's upgrade your ship to enable you to make more money, and getting your first few planets going? An M for overall production, V for Defense, and L for other production?

That all depends on the type game you are getting into. If you are in a highly competitive game, cashing 1st would be a must before the killers get built up enough to kill you. The planet types depend on the game edit. Each one is different these days and require a bit of research and game play to learn it.

There is not a good blanket strategy that will work across all game edits. The number of turns, say 900 compared to an unlim require different strategies. If you are in an unlim, it is doubtful that you will want to run a ZTM until you have a base going unless in a corp, otherwise you will be unable to do anything.

I am limited on time so I can't really go into detail, but I am sure someone else will.

I'm looking at a strategy that is "middle of the road". Mildly competitive game, few thousand turns, etc.

I understand that there won't be a "perfect" opening strategy, and there's a whole variety of edits that change the dynamics.

By looking for middle of the road strategies, it helps me break the game down further and get myself involved in some "average" games to learn from there.

In low turn games, I usually run my turns ppt'ing then do a ztm when I'm out of turns. Most times you won't be able get planets going or go red and cash effectively until day 2. In high turn or unlimited turn games, it's imparative to cash faster or build faster then the oposition, which means you better get to work fast and do all you can before the colos are gone on terra (if you're a blue) or before the universe starts getting figged out (if you are a red)
