Effectiveness of Tholian Sentinel

 Yeah yeah it has 4:1 odds when defending a corp planet, but what does that mean? If you go into a sector that has 3 corp planets, and 1 tholian sentinel, can you directly attack the sentinel never initiating it to "defend" so there's still the 1:1 odds? Or does it always have 4:1 odds if a corp planet is in the sector. Also, does there have to be a person in it (i think yes) and does that person have to be online. I've read in the twbible that you can do that, but that's old literature and I've never seen a direct example of this and am not in the position to test it out myself. Does someone know the answer to how the sentinel really works?

Anyone? Wouldn't mind finding this out myself, and if it's worth having a Tholian in the early going of a game.
