Does changing your ship name have the same effect as buyign a new ship regarding the ability of the grimy trader to locate ports you have ported at?
As in, if you buy a new ship and sleep in it w/o porting anywhere, the grimy trader will say no info available on that trader.

I THINK Grimy will give up port info on the trader, sleeping in a ship you have never ported in will only cause him to give out outdated info. I could be wrong on this...

Yes. Grimy checks the name of the ship you are currently in, then reports sectors where the last ship ported has that same name. If the ship has a unique name and has never ported anywhere, then Grimy will turn up nothing. If someone else has a ship with the same name, Grimy will report sectors where they ported. That's why lots of people name their ships "The Merchant Marines" -- simply because lots of people do it, so they confuse Grimy.
Suddenly you're Busted!

So, a particularly sneaky tactic would be to find whoever your arch nemesis is and name you ship the same thing? (as in Grimy to find him, then rename your ship?)

Just thought you might want to know, in .55 (maybe earlier, never tested) the BRIBE command does not turn up the most recect porting, but rather seems to always turn up the second most recent porting.

Just give him more money. I always seem to get the most recent, or else I'm just getting lucky and I'm always finding people who are ppt, so the 2nd port is very recent as well, and hence they are still there (or in the area).

It may be it has changed in .55. I tested 5 or 6 times with 200k-1million, and ever time I was given the second most recent.

Rave,
I just read the Tavern FAQ and it's great! Really informative ... it brought me back to when I first played tradewars and tried to try typing every imaginable topic to the grimy trader so I could learn some "secrets"! hehe
There's one thing you might want to correct in the FAQ, though, so it doesn't confuse anyone. It's this paragraph:
"It is important to remember, especially for mega-corping teams, that it's not just any fighter that will shield you from the trace. It has to belong to you personally, or to the corp you belong to. For example, in a mega-corping situation, you are playing on the red corp. If you enter a sector with a fighter belonging to you or the corporation you are a member of, your porting will be shielded from the trace. However, the blue corp's fighters (in a situation where the blues are twarp-towing the reds around for improved money-making), you're porting will not be shielded unless you first destroy and replace the fighter with your own, set as either personal or corporate."
That's not right -- if I'm on Corp 1, and Corp 2 has a fig blocking a port, Corp 3 won't be able to get any info on that port via CIM or grimy.
Just thought I'd let you know so you can edit it! Come up with more FAQs like that -- very cool.

Thank you Renato. I'll give this a couple tests. Not that I doubt you, but if I'm going to make a change I better well verify the change. That's two change recommendations made for the FAQ. Do I hear a third?

There's also my planet/bubble building FAQ somewhere in the TW Manual forum. If not, I should repost it as well, though I think that one could definitely use some work.
But thank you for the compliments regarding the Tavern one. It was literally the first serious TW-related piece of material I worked, well over a year ago now.
