I have really been trying to find a nice bubble or tunnel in which to set up base. However, none of the ZTM's which I have used are accurate enough to actually find these. I hear there are 100% accurate versions, but don't they take days to run? Clearly it is nearly impossible to find a good (say 6 sector or better) tunnel in a 20k sector world just by exploring. How do you guys find them?

this question is ok here
usually I use swath now to ZTM then run the bubble finder
then go explore the bubbles
I'm not sure if any other helper has as good a ZTM for twgs (tw_ats was the best - but more geared for mbbs by HVS)

Heh, SWATH is good for finding bubbles. Also, once you locate one with the Bubble Finder thing, use Sector Info with Get Bubble Gate to find the end of the tunnel. After you get that, just launch an ether-probe and see if it is clear (for me, usually ports).

Just a note, if it's early in the game don't set up your bubble in a 6 deep. Set up several in one-deeps. The 6 deep will be found and destroyed in the first weeks of the game as that's where people look first.
Only when you have enough shielded planets to protect your 6 deep door should you think about consolidating to one.
cheers

Thats not true:P i would build in several 2 deeps instead of 1 deeps...being 1 deeps might have a sector adjacent with 3 warps out. when 2 deeps have 1 warp out. and better to defend. aka Photons etc...you get my point. can we play a game and you build in 1 deeps and i'll build in 2 deeps:) we'll see who wins heh.

I usually set up base in a sector with 2-3, 1 sector bubbles comming off of it, i find that these sectors dont get picked up by ZTM's and they make GREAT bases, there isnt really any good way to find these, but if you do find one, its AWSOME for a base

twassist.exe will find bubbles of that type from ztm. Takes less than an hour to run mapper for 5K sectors. Available free at

don't worry folks! my cimtools package for zoc will be coming out soon. it does everything from bubble to ztm. and its free - heh. it also keeps track of ports even after they are blocked. as long as you ran a cim before the port was blocked, it will remember the port type and quantities. the final report contains one-ways, port pairs, and bubble results. perhaps when i retire i'll release my secluded area analysis that finds clusters of bubbles that have only one gate... heh. (and it only takes about 20 seconds to do the math. it found our 100+ sector bubble in USO.)

Even when I have mapped 100% of the universe, I have to go through a checklist to find a base that is safe. I will usually go with 2 or 3 sector dead ends. It's important to map the whole thing;the greater the percentage mapped, the greater the accuracy.

I don't use any helpers, and I just recently found a 4 deep tunnel. In my experience 6 deep tunnels are very rare.
the settings of the game affect this
you'll find 6/8 deep tunnels are not "that" rare .. but sometimes you'll not really notice them .. esp when you've explored alot ..
