Hi all, rather than running up my electric bill running my server on my main PC, is it possible to buy a Virtual server from Amazon, etc and run it from there? If so, does anyone here have one running, and tips for the setup? Thanks! Tib, Sysop Galactic Struggles Circa 1994-Present |

Turns out it works just fine on a hosted VM, but most of them shutdown within an hour of your terminal turning off. And renting a 24/7 dedicated server costs more than running my pc 24/7, but summer heat is coming. Thinking of just getting a passively cooled media type box and run ir quietly from there. |

Hey there most of us running The TWGS are remote hosting on VMs now. I myself host 3 servers. Two of my own and one for Cruncher. There are cheaper options for host out there then Amazon. you just have to look. thanks -sk |

Yeah found cheaper ones but they all log off 10 minutes after you end your session. Need one that just stays thete running after I log off. Mind sharing which service you use? |

I checked out the amazon stuff and yeah those free or super low cost servers are not going to work. I myself use a Dedicated server. but you can find Windows VPS' servers for under $20 a month that will host a TWGS I have used (and still have a VPS here) https://www.databasemart.com/vps-hosting/ Recommend the Basic VPS as is 4GB of RAM which is the min. amount for the TWGS Its $18.99 a month(or cheaper if you pay upfront). Never and an issue with them. I also recommend use windows server 2012. as the last stable version that the TWGS works well with. others have gotten it to work on windows 10+ i have not. -sk |

Thanks ICE. Huge question here, I broke down and bought a $90 Windows XP box that's passively cooled but meets the requirements and them some. Now, is there a guide here somewhere that search isn't showing me on how to copy a game from one system to the other? Thank you!!!!! Tib Www.galacticstruggles.com |

Micro says that if you play an unlimited game you should run scripts 24/7, even when there aren't enough available ports. In that particular scenario I wish that I had filled available space with paired ports. I don't like the idea of running stuff that I am not actively using, but Micro was pretty firm about it, and I don't trust cats. I have an old laptop and I could remote into it from my laptop or desktop, which would enable me to travel and keep my scripts running, to keep Micro happy, but so far it has been fine to just come back, log back in, and do some maintenance. I have looked into cheap Windows PCs, but I am sure that I could run my laptop for a long time for $100. Does anyone rent a VM for games they play, not host? |

Yes. for years I had to rent a VM so i could play. I live in the sticks and internet sucked. now i have fiber but out of habit i still play from my VM -sk |
