Unread post Advice for new server
I'm a university professor looking to setup a TW server for a class in games studies. I have 120 students and I'm looking for advice on number of games (is 1 enough?) and options for setup. I haven't played since 1994ish so any advice will be helpful.

Thanks.

Each game is limited to 200 players, but that many in one game may be a bit crowded, ports will get traded down quickly, colonists will be all taken, etc.

You can use the editors to make changes to the default settings so the game will run a bit faster. For an example the default port regen is 7 days, you can change that to as fast as twice daily (200%). You can increase port density so the "Big Bang" will create more ports in the beginning, and increase colonist production on Terra.

This is one of the few games left that allow player side scripting. Are you students going to be simply playing the game, looking at the mechanics or going so far as to writing macros and scripts?

What is your goal using TWGS in your class?

The goal is historical/experiential (mostly). Hopefully, the students better understand what MUDs were/are by experiencing them. To that end, I have no issue with scripting and macros if the players want to learn that part of the game but I won't be teaching or evaluating macros and I won't be considering the mechanics in coding as part of the course.

I don't think I need to set up the game in a specific way to make it more educational or to meet specific teaching goals... I just want to set up a game that gives some idea what the benefits and restrictions of MUDs were like, and that offers the best experience, in terms of balancing the population (about 120 users) with whatever options make that space the most playable.

For example, Is there control over how many sectors are created? Is there a control over number of moves/actions in a single day? If so, what do you recommend? They'll be playing the game across 3 months. Is that too much time for a single game?
